FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE
★ 5.0 ON THE APP STORE

Facts never reached
the person you love.

Sitting beside them does.

You have quoted the odds. You have promised the flight is two hours and then it is over. You have watched every reasonable thing you said change nothing.

Here is what is left to do, and it is not a better argument. What to say when the boarding call comes. What to leave unsaid. One gentle thing to hand over instead of ten more reasons.

The words are further down this page. Read them first, no assessment needed.

Take the assessment with them in mind, or send it to them and let them answer it themselves.

An illustration of the app open on their phone after landing. The screen asks what helped most, with the small line under it saying it is the one question the app will ever ask. Six answers sit as pill buttons, and the one that is chosen and lit reads: My person, next to me. Underneath, the app answers the tap: noted, the next plan leans on your person.

Four moments, and the words for them.

Short lines, from thousands of people describing their own fear. And the ones they say made the fear worse.

  1. The night before

“I am not going anywhere. Do you want company, or quiet?”

One word answers it, on a night when talking is expensive. The question also hands back the one thing that has gone missing, which is a choice.

Skip“Get some sleep. You will be fine.”

  2. At the gate

“We can board last. I will walk on with you.”

Boarding is a queue with an audience, and going last turns it into a walk with one person. Say it before the boarding call, not during it.

Skip“Look, nobody else here is nervous.”

  3. When the bumps start

Nothing. Hand out, palm up. “Squeeze as hard as you want.”

Of everything people name as the thing that helped in the seat, a hand held in silence is the one that comes back again and again.

Skip“It is only turbulence. Just relax.”

  4. On the ground

“You did that scared. That counts.”

By the jet bridge a hard flight has already rewritten itself as fine, and the next booking gets nothing to stand on. Say the true version out loud while it is still true.

Skip“See? I told you it would be fine.”

The three that cost the most
  • The surprise trip, booked to force the issue. It breaks the trust between you, and that trust was the part that was working.
  • The odds, handed over mid worry. They answer a question nobody asked, and they arrive sounding like the fear is silly.
  • Jokes at the gate. Funny to exactly one of you.

None of the four lines argue. That is the only thing they have in common, and it is the whole trick.

The fear is not one thing, and it is probably not the one you would guess.

Ask five people what the worst part of flying is and you get five answers. The sounds. The door sealing. The wave of fear that builds before the aircraft has even moved. The certainty that this flight is different. The strangers whose night nobody can check.

Facts work on exactly one of those, and only some days. That is why the numbers you brought did not land. They were answering a question nobody was asking.

    Joon

    The bad feeling

“I cannot explain it. I just know something is wrong about this one. Everybody tells me that is not how any of it works. They are right. It changes nothing.”

  • An invented character, drawn in the app’s illustration style.

    Ruth

    The many hands

“It is not the aircraft. It is that I am handing myself to people I will never meet, who had a night I know nothing about, and there is nothing I can check.”

Composite voices, not customers. The names and scenes are invented, and the patterns come from thousands of posts by people describing their own fear.

These two are two of five patterns, and most people recognise theirs on sight. The free assessment names which of the five belongs to the person you love, and the app builds a plan around that one.

Hand over one thing.
Not ten reasons.

Something the person you love can use with nobody watching, including you.

Something that does the counting

Box breathing paced on the screen, with a voice calling each side, so neither of you has to be the one counting. 4-6-8 Breathing when the out breath needs to be the longer one. Two taps to start, and it runs with the wifi off.

Nothing anyone can see

Bilateral thumb taps, hands in the lap, left then right. The five-sense scan. Trust the Chicken when nothing else is working. Nobody in the row notices, which is the difference between a tool they will use and a tool they will not.

Somebody else can do the talking

You do not have to be the calm voice for a whole travel day. A captain’s voice narrates it door by door, from the kitchen table to the gate to the seat, and takes the job off you before you are tired of holding it.

And you are part of the plan

After the wheels are down the app asks one question, once: what helped most. One of the answers it offers is “My person, next to me.” Their next plan leans on that answer, so sitting beside them is not a soft thing that vanishes on landing.

Choose whose voice flies with them.

More than 140 guided audios, in whichever voice they find more soothing.

Send them the message without it sounding like advice.

The worry is that it reads as “here is what is wrong with you, here is the fix.” So it does not.

Pass it on

A message that is not a lecture

Edit it until it sounds like you. Then let it go, and do not follow it up. The follow-up is the pressure.

A flat illustration of nested archways rising out of a bank of clouds, a small sun inside them and a flag at the top.
  • A page written for the moment they open it. It says someone thought of them, and asks for nothing else.
  • No account, no form, no pressure. The same free assessment, in their own time, or not at all.
  • Nothing tells them what is wrong with them. The page asks what the hard part is and takes the answer at face value.

No pressure. Nobody gets a label.

Every session in the app starts by taking the feeling seriously and only then explains anything. That order is the whole method, and it is the order almost everything else got backwards, which is why being handed a reason has never once made a takeoff easier. There is no streak to keep and nothing that scolds anyone for a quiet month.

The assessment on this site is free and it ends at the App Store. Inside the app there is a 3-day free trial, then $9.99/week or $79.99/year.

The wedding you sent regrets to. The grandchildren who have only ever been a screen. The week off you both stopped bringing up, because bringing it up ruined a Tuesday.

The kindest thing you can hand them
is not advice.
