You know the one. The takeoff roll was loud and certain, the climb pressed you into your seat, and then, suddenly, the floor seems to soften. The engine roar fades. What is actually happening: the planned power cut

Pilots call it thrust reduction, and it is written into the departure the way a speed limit sign is written into a road.
Two things happen at once. The engines get quieter, because they are doing planned, smaller work. And the nose lowers slightly, because the plane is trading a steep first climb for a faster, flatter one. Neither is a loss of anything. The plane keeps climbing through the entire maneuver, and the altitude readout, if you could see it, would never stop counting up.
Some airports also ask departing planes to reduce noise over neighborhoods near the runway, which makes the quiet-down slightly more pronounced. Same schedule, same climb, a little more courtesy.
Why your stomach says you are falling when you are not
Your inner ear does not measure height. It measures change. When the upward push of a steep climb relaxes into a gentler one, the only signal your balance system gets is "less up than a second ago," and its nearest label for that is falling. It is the elevator feeling: the car slows near your floor, and for a beat your body insists it is dropping.
So the sensation is real. The interpretation is wrong. Something changed — and changed and wrong are different things. The plane is climbing while your stomach files its complaint, and the seatbelt sign, the crew, the coffee being poured a few rows back all carry on, because from the plane's point of view nothing happened at all.

The second dip: flaps tucking away
A few minutes after the power cut you may feel a smaller version of the same thing, sometimes with a low mechanical whine under the floor. Those are the flaps — panels that made the wing bigger for takeoff — sliding back in now that the plane is fast enough not to need them.
